 Unfriendly, no features at all Jul 18, 2010
Will not let you modify, cut any section of the recording. Unfriendly buttons are completely unintuitive. Clueless with Macs. The sound quality is good, but a lot of rubbing/handling noise. Are there alternatives? Always running out of storage.

I purchased this Ds-40 in the fall of 2009 for my college classes. They had a sale at BestBuy and I paid less than $60 for this one, on Amazon they had it at under $110 at that time. I can't believe it's over $160 for this olympus at amazon now (June 26, 2010).
I have to say I am VERY satisfied with this recorder. Quality of recordings is amazing for class lectures and for own dictation. Even my friend told me that it sounds like the speaker is right here talking in your ear.
The batteries 2-AAA last a LONG time. I was using the recorder intermittently and remember I recorded myself sleeping at night for 7.5 hours after which I listened to my sleeping pattern during the day for, again, 7.5 hrs for possible alien abduction (watch the movie the Fourth Kind, if you like sci-fi) and the battery bar indicator hadn't budged. Also if you record and press on Pause, it will wait for you to continue for 10 minutes after which the recorder shuts off automatically. It also turns off automatically if you forgot to turn it off. Ds-40 also has good a speaker if you are not using ear-buds. It has bunch of other features like auto record at specified time which I never used. If you find a great deal on this DS-40 -buy it, you won't regret, if not buy VN series Olympus VN 5200, 6000, 6200 -they are also as good. If Ds-40 is a 10, then those models would be an 8 for sound and recording quality.

Once you wade through to extreem complexity of managing all this recorders features, it does a fine job of recording. The include software is for PC Windoz only, so Mac users might want to forget using this product.
Keep the extensive manual handy because you'll be referencing it frequently.

Simpply put, buy this item. It's relativley easy to figure out how to operate. it records well.
The price is a little high, but its worth it.
