In less than 6 months I now have a new paperweight Jul 13, 2010 I bought this printer because the reviews at the time were good, it was small, print quality was decent, and it was relatively cheep. Here's the problem. There is a manufacturing flaw. The chips inside the printer will often think that your ink cartriges are empty when they are not, think they are full when they are empty, and will not register when you have place a new cartrige in the slot. I have spent over $200 in buying cartriges that I thought were bad only to find that the problem was the printer itself.
Buyer Beware. Look into this problem before you consider buying. The cheep price is not worth what you will waste in ink.
worst printer or any device I ever bought Jun 11, 2010 I bought this printer in a hurry, my old printer was so old and all my other recent purchases reflected the fast pace of improvement across the board of features in scanners, cameras, etc.
The worst thing about this piece of crap is it takes awhile to see all the problems, so it's too late to take it back. After a couple months:
Constant ink clogs
Constant paper jams
Even when it doesn't jam the image is often tilted, looks unprofessional
Lines appear in photos
Constant head cleanings use up tons of expensive ink
A cartridge stops working but printer doesn't know it - no way to change it unlike every other printer I've owned until you deplete another cartridge.
First printer i ever owned that won't print transparencies??!! I guess making their ink proprietary was a higher priority than printing on film - a-holes!
No more Epson for me. I bet the CEO cut quality and showed a profit on paper and got a big bonus. Then sales drop and he gets fired with a multi-million dollar golden parachute. Go team America!

Not for heavy use. May 02, 2010 I am a writer and a part-time college professor, so my printing needs are pretty intense. This printer started jamming and leaving ink trails after about 6 months. Also, the plastic pieces are cheap and break easily, also the paper capture doesn't renest very easily, it always required a little juggling to get it to push in smoothly. By the end (about 9 months from purchase before I replaced it with a laser printer) it was guzzling ink and the paper feed completely malfunctioned. Hopefully the Brother HL-2140 will serve me better because I don't have lots of money to spend on a printer. By the time I gave up on the Epson, I was seriously looking forward to throwing it in the trash. What a waste of resources.
Another Epson FAIL May 02, 2010 This is the second Epson fail in a row. The first Epson (different model) was in use for less than a year when it all of a sudden failed to recognize the black cartridge. Bought more cartridges, but the fail was in the printer so now have lots of Epson ink.
I junked that first (fairly new) Epson printer.
Just bought the Workforce 40, hoping to use all the ink I have for the first failed unit. Hooked up the Ethernet connection and successfully installed the network connectivity. After hours of frustration in attempts to get data transferred to the printer, gave up on the Ethernet connection for printing. Switched over to the USB connection. After waiting and waiting (20 minutes or so) for data to be sent to the printer, a weak, unreadable print job eminated from the unit. Got one more weak, unreadable print job from the unit before it refused to accept any additional data.
I'm sending the failed Workforce 40 back to Amazon.
So, Epson is officially off my list of makers for printers (along with HP).
I've heard that Canon makes good printers...
