 Don't buy this printer Sep 04, 2010
I've owned this printer for over a year and it has given me nothing but problems. Not sure where to start.
You have to run the head cleaner ALL the time. If it sits idle for a week or more it will spit out bad quality, misaligned prints. You have to always run the head cleaner to get anything decent. and this uses up ink. INK!!! I have spend HUNDREDS in ink on this thing. It is amazing, I feel like I just do a few prints and suddenly it is blinking and wants ink again. It goes thru it SO fast. I might be able to live with it but it is always printing out BAD PRINTS!
Currently it is printing magenta and blue lines over everything I print. No idea why. Have run all the diagnostic tools in the print utility and I can't fix it. Not to mention it prints black smudges all over everything. This is a regular occurrence. I hate this **** printer. I'm at wits end and about to call Epson and try to get my money back for this thing.
STAY AWAY
 Epson 1400 - a piece of Junk Aug 22, 2010
I was very happy with the Epson 1400 for the 1st several months I owned it. In spite of the expensive inks I was getting wonderful results, and really enjoyed the large 13"x19" prints.
The printer had an easy life, I printed about 100 photos with it. I use a Canon for documents.
Unfortunately at the beginning of this month, the 1400's lights began blinking and the printer stopped printing. The blinking lights indicate there is no paper in the feeder, or the CD/DVD tray is open. Neither is correct (there is paper & the CD/DVD tray is not open).
Epson support shipped a replacement. It was "refurbished" but was still broken. The 2nd time they shipped a new printer. It has the same issue as the 1st.
A Google search indicates many others have the same issue.
I have been without a photo printer for a month because I bought an Epson. I have invested more in Epson paper & ink than in the printer. I intended to do a lot of printing this month as I have just returned from a trip.
I actually had great luck with the Canon - I just wore it out.

I've previously owned the Epson 1200 and have had nothing but good results. The 1400 is a great update and I love the cd printing feature. I will admit that it may be a bit difficult to get quality prints your first time around, but once you buy epson paper, profile the printer with computer, and print correctly it's simply amazing. I too was concerned about ink consumption and high priced cartridges for 1400. However, I have found a revolutionary CIS (continuous ink system) which makes ink affordable, and from my experience gives same print quality. I can vouch for prints that are 6 months old, now will they last 100 years, only time will tell... Normally I wouldn't recommend these systems, but this one is different. There is no filling required, ink is available in jumbo cartridges at 100ml each which is inserted into an external unit powered by USB. If you're an advanced user and have already bought this printer or are planing to, i would highly recommend this system as companion to your 1400. You will save a ton on ink... You can find the system at[...] it's the IRIS model FC-002. However, if this is your first photo inkjet printer, then I would suggest to experiment with printing first and buy CIS system after you have mastered your printing skills.

I've used this printer for the production of printable CD's as well as large format photos. Every job has been perfect. The CD software works extremely well.

I received this printer as a birthday gift. It lasted for 1 year and 7 days. Then, I received an "online message" from Epson telling me the printer had out lived it's life. It croaked. On contacting Epson, the rep told me he was sorry i received a faulty printer and if I wished, he could direct me to [...]/printers/royalties ? where I could PURCHASE another priter at a discount. It did above average in color tone. It was slow for quality work. It has problems in command and will print what and how it chooses overiding your settings.
Further investigating the site I discovered on [...] that this printer is likley to self destruct in "4 to 6 months"....The excess ink collecting tray fills, then, shuts it down. Replacement/repair is very costly. I would have to drive mine 60/70 miles for the nearest service store...I live in Palm Springs....so, Riverside or San Bernedino were the closest sites. `I don't think a $300.00 plus printer should wear out it's life in a year. It was certainly not overworked....I also think Epson should make it known this printeer is NOT BUILT TO LAST FOR MORE THAN FOUR TO SIX MONTHS. You only find this out after you burn up 3 C Notes...and personally, I cannot burn up 3 C Notes every 4 to 6 months...can you ? You will receive no resolution to the situation from Epson. Not good business practice or philosophy as far as I am concerned. Buyer, Beware....you could be tossing your hard earned money down the drain on this one.
